Everyone uses people skills in day-to-day situations.

But, we rarely stop to think about what skills we use, how we use them and, perhaps more importantly, whether we could improve the way we use them. Yet, this is the starting point if we want to further develop those skills.

Essentially, we need to reflect not only on how we handled a specific situation but also on how we were feeling at the time.

Whether we like it or not, how we are feeling invariably has an impact on how we behave and how we manage a situation. The technical term for this self-awareness is ‘Emotional Intelligence’. The following definition gives us some concept of the inextricable link between Emotional Intelligence and effective people skills. It is a different way of ‘being smart’.

It includes knowing your feelings and using them to make good decisions; managing your feelings well; motivating yourself with zeal and persistence; maintaining hope in the face of frustration; exhibiting empathy and compassion; interacting smoothly; and managing your relationships effectively. These skills matter immensely in the workplace. Experts now believe that a combination of Emotional Intelligence and intellectual skills is the most powerful determinant of successful and effective job performance.

We have probably all met people who should be successful but, in reality, do not reach their potential due to some indefinable personal trait. By developing a deeper understanding of ourselves and of others, we can work and develop as individuals and operate in organisations, to a much better effect.

By the end of the course delegates will be able to recognise: The five Components of Emotional Intelligence

  • Self-awareness: Recognising your own feelings as they occur is a crucial building block of emotional intelligence. The ability to monitor feelings, from moment to moment, is necessary for psychological insight and self understanding. Being aware of your emotions makes you more confident when making important personal decisions
  • Self Regulation/ Emotion Management: Having appropriate emotional reactions is a capacity that builds on self-awareness. This ability to modulate negative effects such as anxiety, anger, and depression is a crucial emotional skill. Emotional resilience helps you to prevail over life’s inevitable setbacks and upsets. Those who lack emotional self-regulation can often be besieged by feelings of distress.
  • Motivation: Being able to focus on a goal is essential for a range of accomplishments. Emotional self-control and controlling impulsivity, is crucial in working towards your goals. Individuals who can harness their emotions, and maintain hope and optimism despite frustrations, are generally more productive and effective in their efforts.
  • Empathy/ Emotional Coaching Empathy, another skill based in emotional self-awareness, is fundamental to personal effectiveness. Those who are well attuned to subtle social cues that indicate what others feel are more successful in personal and professional relationships.
  • Relationship Handling/ Management: The art of relationships requires skill in managing other’s emotions. Social competence underlies popularity, leadership and interpersonal effectiveness.

Course Outcomes: Understand their emotions and know how to control it in any situation. Understand the significance of intrapersonal and interpersonal skills in good leadership. Motivate yourself and others.
