Karen is director of sales and customer retention at Daisy Communications, a UK leading provider of telephony, connectivity, mobile and cloud services. Here she shares her inspirational Lancashire woman in business story.
Daisy Communications is one of the largest independent providers of telephony, connectivity, mobile and cloud services in the UK. We help over 200,000 business customers across almost every sector to better connect with their customers, suppliers and teams. We help our customers to differentiate their businesses through improved customer service underpinned by our technology.
This is not my own business. The founder, Matthew Riley, is from Lancashire. Building a business that provides local employment and growth opportunity is vital to Matthew and continues to be one of our core values.
One of the things I am most proud of is being part of a team that is responsible for the culture within Daisy Communications, where everyone is valued equally regardless of role or position. Sales in telecommunications, traditionally, was a male dominated industry and could be seen to be very cut throat but I have been part of building a culture that encourages women to join our industry, and helps them to build successful careers.
Having a coach outside of the business has been very valuable to me over the years, I have had different coaches at different times in my life, but they are the people who have pushed me, when needed, out of my comfort zone. They have challenged my pre-conceptions that were holding me back and have given me confidence to back myself.
When things are tough, I tell myself if this was easy everyone would do it and we wouldn’t be building something special.
Build into your diary time to do nothing. No great idea ever came to someone when their head was in a spreadsheet. Block out time to do nothing - the solutions miraculously come in the silence. Exercise, outdoor if possible. It brings perspective and peace to your mind and body. Spend your time on what you can control. Don’t waste time worrying about things you can’t control, it’s wasted energy.
Build a large network. Men seem to be much better at this than women for some reason, but as women we have a lot to give to others who would be happy to support us in return. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, knowing when and who to ask is a strength don’t ever see it as a weakness. Website: www.daisycomms.co.uk
