Here, he talks about his role in supporting Lancashire businesses.

What motivated you to want to help other people in business and to become a business adviser?

I like to make a difference and see the progress peole make when given the tools to support problem solving and decision-making

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

There is no one in particular, but three come to mind, because they have challenged the status quo. They are Steve Jobs (Apple), Albert Savoie (Google) and Eric Reiss (Business Model Canvas).

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

Its industrial heritage and the underlying support from research and educational institutes.

How do you like to start your working day?

With a plan of the tasks to be completed but leaving space in the schedule for ad hoc requests and research.

What do you consider to be the greatest challenge for Lancashire businesses in the current economic climate?

For the SMEs that I am dealing with, it is the ability to create and manage a plan that has a clear vision of the future of the business; and leaving enough time in the business to monitor the strategic activities and understanding the impact on the business.

A plan needs activities, durations and measures with any dependencies clearly identified.

What are your three top tips for anyone looking to start or grow a business?

1. Maintain a clear mission, vision and values which also embrace sustainability.
2. Build a strategic plan that considers the key internal processes that add value and ensure they are performed effectively.
3. Create a business scorecard that deals with leading indicators not just lagging ones such as finance.
