If you are an early-stage business, or an aspiring individual with a great business idea, Boost’s Flying Start service can help you to grow. Aimed at leaders who have a bright and growing vision for their new business, the service focusses on building business and financial acumen and the core skills needed to establish a new business and drive sustainable growth.

Boost Flying Start business adviser Tony Carr, a professionally accredited social enterprise business adviser and mentor, talks about his role in supporting Lancashire businesses.

What motivated you to want to help other people in business and to become a business adviser?

While my former career in retail was very successful, it was not highly satisfying. Following my degree in counselling and psychotherapy, I have been able to communicate my past experience in the world of high-level entrepreneurship in order to help others achieve their goals.

The trend of social entrepreneurship and understanding social impact is my great motivating force.

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

I am a proud Lancastrian, and this county has much to offer in variety and locations to run a business.

How do you like to start your working day?

I am a great believer in planning ahead, but only when I have had a strong coffee to start off the day.

What do you consider to be the greatest challenge for Lancashire businesses in the current economic climate?

I have been an entrepreneur for many years. There is never a shortage of new ideas and approaches, no matter what the economy is doing. The challenges presented by climate change and the slow-down of the economy will present new opportunities for Lancashire businesses.

What are your three top tips for anyone looking to start or grow a business?

  1. Know and fully understand your market
  2. See what similar ideas are successful in other parts of the UK (or even worldwide)
  3. Don’t rely on one form of income
