Meet the Boost team: Jon Dingoor

Jon Dingoor Boost business adviser

Whether you’re starting a new business, in the early stages, looking to scale up an established business or simply looking for some great business support, the Boost Business Advice team can help.

Jon Dingoor, a specialist in commercial business and general management with experience in the UK and internationally, talks about his role in supporting Lancashire businesses.

What motivated you to want to help other people in business and to become a business adviser?

Starting or running a small or medium-sized business can be a very lonely and thankless task. I certainly don’t promise to have all the answers for everyone, but by offering an empathetic ear, together with a fresh pair of eyes through which to view the business, I like to think I can make a difference by helping to identify opportunities for improvement.

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

I can’t single out any one individual as there have been many people who have influenced and inspired me. That is the benefit gained from working with (and for) a wide range of characters – some you might try to emulate and some you recognise you would never want to behave like.

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

There are many reasons, from physical location to the hard-working character of the inhabitants. While much has changed in the last 100 years, the county still has a proud history of industry, innovation and commerce.

How do you like to start your working day?

Coffee, followed by a review of my ‘To Do’ list, which often contains leftovers from the day before – the list, that is, not the coffee!

What do you consider to be the greatest challenge for Lancashire businesses in the current economic climate?

I think that most people (especially in business) have a well-founded fear of uncertainty. As we all pick up the pieces of a turbulent few years and deal with the current cost of living crisis, the prospect of a general election and the significant changes it may bring are no doubt a concern for many.

What are your three top tips for anyone looking to start or grow a business?

  1. Research your market thoroughly
  2. Identify and leverage the points of differentiation
  3. Don’t focus on price

In essence, create a detailed business plan and set clear, measurable targets to measure your performance.
