Whether you’re starting a new business, in the early stages, looking to scale-up an established business or simply looking for some great business support, the Boost Relationship Management team can help you navigate the business support landscape to find the right support for your business. Today, Chris Rose, an accredited business advisor with over 25 years’ experience supporting Lancashire businesses, talks about his role as a Boost relationship manager.

What do you see is your role as a Boost relationship manager?

In my role of Business Relationship Manager, I help businesses through the complex landscape of business support – sometimes confusing even to those of us working in it, and often bewildering to businesses who don’t have the time to understand where to go.

My role is an honest broker – to understand what a business is trying to achieve, what’s stopping it – and put them in touch with the relevant support.

What kinds of businesses have you helped recently and what areas of support were they seeking?

There are so many diverse businesses in Lancashire but most have the same issues – how to grow sales, how to find staff, how to promote themselves . . .

The pandemic, and the restrictions on many businesses, has made things more difficult for most. As a result, enquiries around accessing funding and recruiting staff have become more prevalent.

How do you feel you have helped them?

I’ve worked with a wide range of businesses across all sizes and sectors. The one thing they all have in common is they are time poor – they don’t have enough hours in the day to do everything they need to.

They can’t afford to waste time in looking for the right help and this is where my colleagues and I can help in ensuring they get the appropriate support. Business owners appreciate being able to talk about their business with someone who understands their business, someone who is both independent and impartial, and who can help. Running a small business can be a lonely place.

What are the key challenges for Lancashire businesses at the moment?

The last 18 months have been an unprecedented challenge for most businesses. A small number have done well but most have struggled. The grant support and furlough schemes have helped businesses survive, but they are now faced with issues in recruiting staff – a massive problem in many sectors especially hospitality - and supply chain issues affecting construction and many other businesses.

Being heard and seen is one of the major challenges – many businesses have had to develop an online presence, and now understand how important this area is moving forward

Why it is so important to help Lancashire business leaders?

Small businesses are the engine room of Lancashire’s economy. If we can keep those we already have and help them grow, and at the same time encourage new businesses to start, then this benefits the local economies in our area, and in turn helps the national economy to get back to its feet.
