Boost Q&A: Rebecca Keen, RKMS Group

RKMS Group ISO9001

Rebecca Keen is the operations director at Blackpool-based RKMS Group. The family business operates as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for all business compliance needs, including compliance with employment and HR, health and safety, fire safety and ISO standards. As ISO9001 specialists, they help companies achieve ISO9001 accreditation.

Rebecca’s father John Keen, the current managing director, purchased Rosewood Management Services in 2009 and began trading as RKMS Group in 2010. They engaged with Boost after hearing about the Boost Growth Mentoring programme at a Pink Link Women’s networking event and seeking advice on succession planning. Rebecca shares her business story and tips for those looking to establish and grow their own company.

What support did you receive from Boost and how has it helped you and your business?

We received growth and succession planning and individual coaching from Boost mentor Mick Cox, a specialist in management structures. We have now managed to create a roadmap which plans out our growth plans over the next few years and the transition of ownership being passed down from the current CEO to his children and grandchildren, to futureproof the business.

What piece of advice stood out the most during your Boost support?

Define your vision and goals. Clearly articulate your long-term vision and set specific, achievable goals to guide your business strategy.

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

It would be hard to choose just one! for example, Maggie Oliver, for her sheer perseverance and determination standing up to corruption, in such truly heartbreaking situations, Sandra Cottom-shea, for building her empire in a ‘man’s world’ whilst also juggling tough times in her personal life and so many others who have achieved and continue to achieve greatness! no matter how small, it’s a steppingstone in the right direction and that drives me to know that I can achieve that success that I strive for!

What motivates you in business and why?

My motivation comes from completing a project well, meeting new people and understanding all kinds of different businesses. The why is because of the buzz you get when you receive that feedback from your client, to be a part of their success, to know you and your team are doing a great job! And last of all, getting to work with such a great team. They make work fun, and they are my second family.

How do you like to start your working day?

Destressing after the school run with a cup of coffee whilst chatting to the team about what they have been up to or catching up on emails/ LinkedIn.

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

Lancashire has a diverse economy, with strengths in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, aerospace, energy, digital technology, and tourism. This diversity can provide opportunities for collaboration, partnerships, and business growth.

What would you say to someone who is considering using Boost?

Go for it! It allows you to take a step out of your business in order to reflect on what it is you want and where you want to go as well as making clear what you don’t want!

What is your advice for anyone looking to grow a business?

  1. Invest in your talent and leadership, upskill or hire skilled individuals who align with your company's vision and values. Develop strong leaders who can drive growth, inspire teams, and make strategic decisions.
  2. As well as focusing on customer acquisition and retention. Invest in marketing and sales efforts to attract new customers. Additionally, prioritize customer satisfaction and loyalty by providing excellent products, services, and support.
  3. And remember, growing a business takes time, effort, and strategic planning. It's important to be adaptable, learn from both successes and failures, and continuously seek opportunities for improvement. Rebecca Keen RKMS
