Boost Q&A: Lisa Sourbutts, Cube HR

Lisa Sourbutts CUBE HR Web

Lisa Sourbutts is founder and managing director of CUBE HR, a human resources consultancy established in Burnley in 2017. The company received startup support through Boost's Flying Start programme, a funded business support service which helps Lancashire entrepreneurs establish their new business. CUBE has since seen strong growth, recruiting several new members of staff and continuing to grow its client base. As part of a new Boost series sharing the insights of Lancashire business leaders who have received support from Boost, Lisa shares her thoughts on growing a business.

What support did you receive from Boost and how has it helped you and your business?

When I first set up CUBE, I joined the Flying Start programme and attended sessions on finance, sales, marketing, and all of these made me think about things I’d never had to before. More recently I attended a Peer Network group and this helped me massively as we could knowledge share and work together in a confidential environment.

What piece of advice stood out the most during your Boost support?

Not to undervalue your offering. When you start out and you have no money coming in, it’s easy to say yes to everything and to discount things but so many of the Boost experts told me to believe in what I was doing, and our rates, so I stuck to it. We say no to work we don’t want and focus on what we are good at.

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

There are far too many to mention here and I would hate to single out just one. So many people in my network have been there for me over the years at different times, for different things, many of them have become friends.

What motivates you in business and why?

To be the best we can and to continuously improve, for our team and for our customers. I love nothing more than watching the team develop and take pride in their work because they enjoy working here and that then means they do a brilliant job so our customers love us.

How do you like to start your working day?

Saying good morning to all the team, either in person or via Teams (we do hybrid working) and making sure they are all ok before looking at the three things I have set myself to get done for the day.

Why is Lancashire a good location for a business?

The people! Everything you could ever want is in Lancashire. Other businesses to work with, friendly people, and amazing countryside. Why would you go anywhere else?

What would you say to someone who is considering using Boost?

"What are you waiting for? There is nothing to lose and lots to gain. You’ll gain new skills that are transferrable straight into your business and you’ll also meet some great people too."

What is your advice for anyone looking to grow a business?

Be realistic and make sure you have processes in place before you start to grow so that you can ensure consistency and quality. And of course contact Boost for support!

Would you like to see your business grow? So would we. To speak to someone from the Growth Hub about business support, contact Boost online or call 0800 488 0057.
