Boost Q&A: Sher Shah, Accrington Surgical Instrument Suppliers Ltd

Sher Shah

Established for many years, Accrington Surgical Instrument Suppliers Ltd is one of the leading suppliers of high quality surgical instruments and procedure packs in the UK. Its product range covers a wide array of instruments including reusable theatre-quality surgical instruments and single-use surgical instruments that are supplied to the NHS and private healthcare sector; including BMI Healthcare, Bupa, Nuffield Health, Spire Healthcare and Circle Healthcare.

Director Sher Shah has been involved in the day-to-day running of the family-owned business since graduating and completing his university studies. Here, he shares his business inspirations, discusses the Boost support he received, and why Lancashire is a great place to do business.

Why did you contact Boost?

I saw a need to contact Boost as a way of seeking help and advice in helping to grow the business further in the current customer market and a way of looking at our business at a different angle and any potential newer markets we could be looking at targeting.

What support did you receive from Boost and how has it helped you and your business?

I’ve gained a lot of support from Boost with the help of Boost business adviser Purves Ali who put me on touch with the Boost Growth Catalyst Programme, initially with the help of Yusuf Musa and then with Boost business adviser Amir Shafiq.

We have seen an increase in turnover since joining the program and found areas of the business where improvements can be made.

What piece of advice stood out the most during your Boost support?

A piece of advice that was given to me during the program was to “stay consistent at what we do and not to worry about what other companies are doing”. This advice has helped served me well at every step of this journey.

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

My biggest business inspiration would have to be my father as watching myself grow up and learn from my father and taking in his business expertise and experience has helped to shape who I am today and how I make decisions.

What motivates you in business and why?

Just knowing that we are making a difference in what we do in people’s everyday life. Knowing somewhere out there, our products have helped someone’s loved ones and knowing that being consistent in our ethos of providing quality products does help to ensure we are contributing to someone’s health.

What are your growth plans for the next three years?

My growth plans are to establish the company into the non-conventional medical markets such as the medical army sector and sectors such as the retail supermarket sector and develop an online purchasing presence and to provide additional services currently lacking to help compete further such as instrument repair services.

How do you like to start your working day?

It’s usually a piece of fruit or the odd occasional green tea. I’m not a coffee lover at all.

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

The people and the area are so warm and loving that makes it special compared to any other area to do business.

What would you say to someone who is considering using Boost?

Don’t hesitate! It honestly will be the correct decision to take, especially if you would like a different set of eyes and a different set of opinions to help to grow or develop your business.

What is your advice for anyone looking to grow a business?

Keep a positive mindset. You have to conquer all negative thoughts that we all experience from time to time in our heads. If you feel like you need help, always ask and be open to any potential opportunities that come knocking along the way.
