Boost Q&A: John and Elaine Grimshaw, Paws in the Paddock Aughton

Paws in the paddock

Elaine Grimshaw works part-time in charity administration, while husband John balances farm contracting with running his own farm. Facing farming challenges and the phase-out of subsidies, they were looking to diversify to help make the farm more sustainable.

After seeing an increase in the number of dogs in the local area and a growing demand for safe spaces to exercise dogs, they created Paws in the Paddock Aughton, a secure dog exercise field designed to offer pet owners a safe environment for dogs to run and play freely, without the concerns or risks often associated with public spaces.

Elaine and John received support from Boost at the start of their new business journey. Here they share their business inspirations, discuss the Boost support received, and why Lancashire is a great place to do business.

Why did you contact Boost?

Boost was recommended to us following a meeting with West Lancashire Borough Council’s Business Engagement Officer. We initially made contact during our first year to enquire if there was any business support available as we were looking to develop our current facility and possibly expand our offer.

What support did you receive from Boost and how has it helped you and your business?

We have been supported by Boost's Flying Start Service, which has provided valuable mentorship, offering ideas that have helped develop our business. With their support, we’ve improved our website and refined our social media presence, which has resulted in higher engagement, more bookings, and increased revenue.

What piece of advice stood out the most during your Boost support?

The support from Boost has been invaluable, providing us with expert guidance and practical resources to drive our business forward. It helped us to define clear goals and establish our vision, whilst also assessing the business’s strengths and weaknesses.

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

Our friends and family have been a huge inspiration, offering enthusiasm and encouragement that has driven us forward. Their support has given us the confidence to take risks, seize opportunities, and make the most of what we have.

What motivates you in business and why?

We’re driven by the chance to make a meaningful impact, offering a facility for the local community while growing a business for the future – bringing ideas to life and making a difference.

What are your growth plans for the next three years?

Looking ahead, we are aiming to develop our current offer by making improvements to our existing field (while keeping it natural and in-keeping with the surroundings) and to expand to include another facility but with a difference, so – watch this space!

How do you like to start your working day?

We are always up and out early in the fresh air, checking the field for the day ahead, followed by a nice hot brew when we get back!

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

Lancashire is a prime business location, offering strong transport links, a skilled workforce, and a supportive business environment. The region benefits from business support and funding and is an ideal place for growth.

What would you say to someone who is considering using Boost?

Go for it! The advice we have received has been invaluable, Boost is a great resource of advice, guidance, networking opportunities and so much more.

What is your advice for anyone looking to grow a business?

Embrace all feedback, whether positive or negative, and use it as an opportunity for growth. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement, while positive feedback reinforces what you're doing well. Nobody is perfect, don’t give up – follow your dreams!
