Boost client Q&A: Luke Arrowsmith, Selected Cyber Limited

Selected Cyber Limited

Luke Arrowsmith has over a decade of experience in IT security, specialising in cybersecurity. His expertise lies in delivering tailored security solutions to tackle complex digital threats for small to medium size businesses.

His business Selected Cyber Limited provides robust, adaptable security solutions, including real-time monitoring, threat detection, and incident response, to ensure your business stays resilient against cyber threats.

Luke shares his business inspirations, discusses the Boost support received, and why Lancashire is a great place to do business.

Why did you contact Boost?

I initially contacted Boost as I was looking for help identifying areas of growth within my business. I had already started my business and a good understanding of what and how I wanted to do. I’d identified that Boost was a good option for networking opportunities as well.

What support did you receive from Boost and how has it helped you and your business?

One-on-one support from the beginning; Boost emphasised the importance of setting clear and achievable goals, understanding the market, and developing a business structure that supports growth.

They identified several strategic actions and milestones necessary for Selected Cyber’s development.

What piece of advice stood out the most during your Boost support?

In the session, the advisor and I discussed the potential impact of the UK Cyber Force coming to Lancashire and how this would generate a potential boost in awareness amongst Lancashire SMEs on the importance of cybersecurity. I found this level of insight helpful and an interesting idea which I’d not considered previously.

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

I’d have to say that my wife has really being my biggest inspiration. She took a huge leap of faith becoming a self-employed wedding photographer, leaving her stable school job. This gave me the push and the support I needed to make the jump from being an employee to being a business owner.

What motivates you in business and why?

My family is my biggest motivation. However, I’m a people person, that’s a big motivator. I like a challenge and the feeling of finding a solution to a problem. It’s quite common to find me working late if I can’t draw a line under a task.

I’d like to grow Selected Cyber to be recognised as a trusted cyber & security organisation where customers can access products, professional services and people without hard sales tactics.

What are your growth plans for the next three years?

The next three years really excite me. We’ve come so far already. My goal is to continue to grow the businesses turnover year on year, whilst also introducing new service lines, like CCTV and fibre optic networking that we have done recently.

I also think that partnering with new vendors and service providers to expand our portfolio of offerings will be key to being relevant to a wide range of businesses.

How do you like to start your working day?

I’m an early riser and have two children, and I regularly do the school run, so I’m normally sat at my desk before 9am. However, being self-employed means that I’m not tied to my desk.

Sometimes, I like to take our dog Milo (the cockapoo) for a walk to help clear my mind or help me find a solution to an on-going challenge. I find this is a great start to the day.

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

Hailing from Yorkshire, I’ll have to be careful with this answer. However, Lancashire is a cracking place to do business. The people are very down to earth, great transport links and the scenery is spectacular.

The mixture of traditional engineering, manufacturing and more modern industries makes it a place ready for business.

What would you say to someone who is considering using Boost?

Don’t think about it. Just do it. The team at Boost are simply fantastic. There is such a range of experience. The support is priceless and really worth your time with them.

The business advice and support is expert level, but the added benefits of development workshops, networking and social events is the real bonus!

What is your advice for anyone looking to grow a business?

Stay adaptable, know your market, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Build a solid team, keep your customers happy, and never stop learning. Oh, and sort your cash flow – passion won’t pay the bills!

Most importantly, enjoy the ride – business is a marathon, not a sprint.
