Boost client Q&A: John Winstanley, Devel Edits

John Winstanley, Devel Edits, new

Devel Edits is the developmental editing aspect of the Devel Creatives family, founded by John Winstanley. It focuses on transforming raw manuscripts into developed pieces of work that flow seamlessly from start to finish.

John has a decade of writing and developmental editing experience and here he shares his business inspirations, discusses the Boost support received, and why Lancashire is a great place to do business.

Why did you contact Boost?

I was seeking professional assistance in setting up and running a business in 2023/2024, as well as to gain access to business club meetings to gain customers as well as finding out about access to funding opportunities.

What support did you receive from Boost and how has it helped you and your business?

I was introduced to Boost business adviser Alistair Clarke who I have met on several occasions, with another meeting due soon. It has helped me focus on a business model that works for myself and what my business can offer that does not already exist locally – and if it does – why people should choose me over the competition.

What piece of advice stood out the most during your Boost support?

  • Be clear about what you offer and cost – hence, I have taken time and I am still shaping my website and services.
  • Putting in place a fee structure that covers all overheads and provides a profit.

Who has been your biggest business inspiration and why?

Attending meetings organised by YAB (Your Affordable Board), a peer-to-peer business community in Chorley. Their objective is growing businesses through structured helping, and not awkward selling.

What motivates you in business and why?

Being the first reader of a client’s manuscript because it is a privilege. The journey I go on with clients to see their words develop and become a published book – it is cathartic.

Overcoming the challenges to meet their expectations as this helps me develop as a developmental editor. For example: seeking out publishers and securing deals for clients.

What are your growth plans for the next three years?

To double, even triple turnover as I have already doubled what I earned in 2023/24 tax accounts submitted to HMRC.

How do you like to start your working day?

Checking emails and socials and bank balance(!) over breakfast while listening to the news.

Why is Lancashire a great location for a business?

It is where I have lived from the age of six and has incredible diversity of cultures and historical heritages.

What would you say to someone who is considering using Boost?

Give it a go – what have you to lose?

What is your advice for anyone looking to grow a business?

Seek advice, guidance and support from as many sources as possible – you do not know all the answers as you do not know all the question to ask.
